Cultural introduction
The Lantern Festival, known as Yuanxiao Jie (ๅ ๅฎต่) in Chinese, marks the grand finale of the Lunar New Year celebrations. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, when the first full moon of the new year rises โ symbolizing reunion, brightness, and hope.
Traditionally, families gather to admire glowing lanterns, solve riddles written on them, and share sweet glutinous rice dumplings (tฤngyuรกn ๆฑคๅ), which represent unity and togetherness. The round shape of both the lanterns and the dumplings reflects the idea of wholeness and harmony in the year ahead.
Lanterns have long been a part of Asian culture, representing the wish for light, guidance, and prosperity. In ancient times, people believed lighting lanterns could bring good fortune and drive away darkness. Over the centuries, they evolved from simple paper lamps to intricate works of art โ glowing symbols of creativity and joy.
