It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month\, when the first full moon of the new year rises — symbolizing reunion\, brightness\, and hope. \n\n\n\nTraditionally\, families gather to admire glowing lanterns\, solve riddles written on them\, and share sweet glutinous rice dumplings (tāngyuán 汤圆)\, which represent unity and togetherness. The round shape of both the lanterns and the dumplings reflects the idea of wholeness and harmony in the year ahead. \n\n\n\nLanterns have long been a part of Asian culture\, representing the wish for light\, guidance\, and prosperity. In ancient times\, people believed lighting lanterns could bring good fortune and drive away darkness. Over the centuries\, they evolved from simple paper lamps to intricate works of art — glowing symbols of creativity and joy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. These masks are not just artistic objects but powerful cultural symbols that reflect the values\, beliefs\, and social commentary of Korean society. Crafted with exaggerated expressions\, each tal character represents archetypes such as the nobleman\, the young woman\, the monk\, or the fool—often used to satirise the upper classes\, criticize hypocrisy\, and highlight social inequalities. \n\n\n\nCulturally\, tal masks serve as a means of collective storytelling and catharsis\, allowing performers and audiences to confront social issues through humour\, dance\, and performance. They also hold spiritual significance\, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Today\, the tal is a cherished symbol of Korean heritage\, resilience\, and identity—connecting modern Koreans with their ancestral traditions and community values. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. Traditionally held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month\, it celebrates the harvest season\, family unity\, and appreciation of the moon\, which is believed to be at its brightest and fullest on that night. \n\n\n\nWoodblock painting\, also known as woodblock printing\, holds profound cultural significance as both an artistic technique and a vehicle for storytelling\, cultural transmission\, and social influence. Originating in China and later flourishing in countries like Japan (as ukiyo-e)\, Korea (minhwa)\, and parts of Southeast Asia\, this method allowed for the mass production of images\, texts\, and religious works\, making art and knowledge more widely accessible across social classes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. With roots dating back over 2\,000 years\, the festival is a time to honor cultural heritage\, enjoy festive customs\, and reflect on themes of loyalty and community. \n\n\n\nOne of the most iconic traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival is the thrilling dragon boat races. In these races\, teams of paddlers row long\, brightly painted boats shaped like dragons to the beat of rhythmic drumming. This tradition is said to commemorate the heroic poet Qu Yuan\, who lived during the Warring States period. According to legend\, Qu Yuan\, a loyal minister\, drowned himself in the Miluo River as an act of protest against political corruption. Villagers raced their boats to save him and threw rice into the river to distract fish from his body. Over time\, this act evolved into the dragon boat races and the custom of eating zongzi\, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves\, which remain a beloved festival food today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. This year\, we’ve chosen Peking Opera. \n\n\n\nPeking Opera\, or Jingju\, is one of the most iconic forms of Chinese traditional theatre. Developed in the 18th century and refined over centuries\, it combines music\, dance\, mime\, acrobatics\, and stylized acting into a rich and symbolic performance art. The characters are vividly brought to life through elaborate costumes and distinctive painted face masks known as lianpu. Each color and pattern on the mask reveals the personality\, role\, and fate of the character — from noble generals to cunning villains\, wise elders to spirited young women. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect:\n\n\n\nWe’re not just teachers — we’re experience designers. Every Dear Asia workshop engages your head\, hands\, and heart. Learn something new\, make something beautiful\, taste something delicious\, and connect more deeply with the cultures of Asia. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you’ll: \n\n\n\n\nLearn about Peking Opera and the symbolism behind the colorful face masks\n\n\n\nMake your own hanging ornament inspired by the Huadan character\n\n\n\nTaste a traditional treat that ties into the culture we’re exploring\n\n\n\n\nThe craft is beginner-friendly — simple enough for all ages\, yet rich in meaning. As you assemble your ornament\, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how even the smallest decorative details serve to tell stories on the grand stage of Peking Opera. \n\n\n\nCome celebrate with us — and leave with more than just a souvenir: leave with a story\, a memory\, and a connection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails of the event\n\n\n\n\n21st May\n\n\n\nTime: 6-7pm \n\n\n\nWhere:  Dear Asia in Aldgate Tower \n\n\n\nWho: All are welcome! \n\n\n\n  £30 – book your tickets if you are not one of our current students. Dating back over 2\,000 years\, this festival symbolises unity\, harmony\, and the hope for a bright future. \n\n\n\nLanterns are the heart of the festival. Traditionally\, they were made of paper and illuminated with candles\, but modern versions now feature intricate designs and LED lights. Each lantern represents a wish for good fortune\, prosperity\, and happiness. In some traditions\, riddles are written on lanterns\, and solving them brings luck and joy. \n\n\n\nThe Lantern Festival is also a time for families to gather\, admire the stunning lantern displays\, and enjoy festive foods like tangyuan—sweet glutinous rice balls that symbolise family unity and togetherness. \n\n\n\nThis festival not only honors cultural traditions but also celebrates light\, new beginnings\, and the connections we share with one another. The word “Setsubun” means “seasonal division\,” as it signifies the day before the start of the new season. It’s a festive occasion that combines ancient traditions with a sense of renewal and hope for the year ahead. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, Setsubun was a time for people to cleanse themselves from the misfortunes of the past year and prepare for the blessings of the upcoming season. One of the most popular customs is mamemaki\, the act of throwing roasted soybeans to drive away evil spirits and bring good fortune. People often chant\, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (“Out with the demons! In with the luck!”) as they toss beans\, symbolising the warding off of bad luck and welcoming prosperity. \n\n\n\nIn addition to mamemaki\, Ehomaki\, a special type of sushi roll\, is enjoyed during Setsubun. The long\, uncut sushi roll is filled with a variety of ingredients that are meant to bring good health and happiness. Traditionally\, it is eaten in silence while facing the year’s “lucky direction\,” which varies each year based on ancient fortune-telling practices. This custom is believed to bring good fortune and happiness to those who partake. \n\n\n\nSetsubun is a time to reflect\, rejuvenate\, and embrace the changing seasons. Whether through festive rituals\, delicious food\, or family gatherings\, it is a celebration of both the end of winter and the hope for a prosperous and joyful spring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. The Year of the Snake\, which will begin on January 29\, 2025\, is a symbol of wisdom\, mystery\, and transformation. \n\n\n\nDuring Chinese New Year\, families typically clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and make space for good fortune. They decorate with red symbols\, lanterns\, and couplets that represent wealth and happiness. People often gather for a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve\, where they share symbolic foods like dumplings and fish for prosperity. Many also give red envelopes filled with money to children and singles\, a gesture to bring good luck. \n\n\n\nOne of the most beloved traditions during the Lunar New Year is fortune stick telling (Kau Cim)\, a practice that dates back to ancient times. Typically performed in temples\, Kau Cim involves shaking a container filled with bamboo sticks\, each marked with a number. When a stick falls out\, the number is matched to a fortune\, offering guidance and predictions for the year ahead. This ritual is especially significant during the New Year\, as it symbolises the desire for insight\, protection\, and blessings. For many\, it is a way to seek direction for the months ahead\, whether in matters of health\, wealth\, or relationships. The fortune might offer reassuring predictions or advice\, but it always carries the message of growth and reflection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. While it’s not a national holiday\, it has become a time for joy and celebration\, often associated with romance. Couples exchange gifts and enjoy romantic dinners\, while vibrant light displays create a magical atmosphere. \n\n\n\nKFC has become a Christmas tradition largely due to a successful marketing campaign in the 1970s. At that time\, KFC promoted the idea of enjoying fried chicken as a festive meal\, positioning it as a Western-style Christmas dinner. The campaign resonated with the public\, leading to a unique cultural phenomenon where families and couples began to celebrate Christmas by ordering KFC. \n\n\n\nToday\, many people pre-order KFC for Christmas Eve\, and it’s common to see festive buckets of fried chicken being enjoyed alongside holiday decorations. The association of KFC with Christmas has become so strong that it represents a fun and convenient way to celebrate the holiday\, blending Western influences with Japanese customs.

Meanwhile\, Japan’s embrace of Halloween is characterized by its creative expression\, influenced by anime and manga\, with themed parties and events drawing crowds\, especially in major cities. For the two\, it was love at first sight. However\, when Zhinhu’s mother discovered that her daughter married a mere mortal\, she brought her back to heaven and casted a massive river between earth and heaven to separate the couple – which is now referred to as the Milky Way. Touched by the love between Zhinhu and Niulang\, the magpies on land flew up to heaven and helped the couple by forming a bridge across the river\, allowing the two to reunite. Their love moved Zhinhu’s mother\, who eventually permitted the couple to meet once a year on that very same day\, which is the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. \n\n\n\nThe Qixi Festival is celebrated with various customs\, including activities such as embroidery. Young women pray for skill in needlework and embroidery\, while couples exchange gifts and express their affection for one another. In recent years\, Qixi has evolved into a modern celebration of love\, with couples going on romantic dates\, exchanging gifts\, and professing their love for each other. The festival holds cultural significance beyond romantic love\, symbolizing the enduring power of love\, loyalty\, and devotion. Qixi Festival serves as a reminder to cherish and appreciate the loved ones in our lives\, fostering a sense of connection and gratitude among family and friends.

To prevent fish from consuming his body\, villagers raced dragon-shaped boats to rescue him\, which gave rise to the modern-day dragon boat races. Today\, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with vibrant dragon boat races\, where teams paddle vigorously to the rhythm of drums\, symbolizing the spirit of unity and perseverance. Additionally\, the festival is marked by the consumption of sticky rice dumplings\, called zongzi\, which are traditionally wrapped in bamboo leaves. These festivities not only honor the memory of Qu Yuan but also foster a sense of community and cultural pride among participants and spectators alike.

This vibrant and joyful occasion is not only a time to give thanks for the bountiful harvest but also an opportunity for families and communities to come together\, share stories\, and create lasting memories.   \n\n\n\nKoreans celebrate Chuseok by making special foods\, particularly a certain kind of rice cake called songpyeon. Songpyeon is made with finely ground new rice and the dough is kneaded into small round shapes and filled with sesame seeds\, chestnuts\, red beans\, or other similar ingredients. Koreans traditionally give thanks for the harvest and make songpyeon with the new rice from that years’ crop.
