SUMMARY:Double Eleven Hotpot Dinner Social - Don't Eat Alone on Single's Day...
DESCRIPTION:Nov11Double Eleven Hotpot Dinner Social – Don’t Eat Alone on Single’s Day…When:11 November 2025 18:00Where:W1 \nClick the BOOK TICKET button below to reserve your spot via our Eventbrite listing.\n\n\n\nRegisterSubmitting form\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Double Eleven?\n\n\n\nIf you’re a fan of Asian culture\, you might already know that Double Eleven (11/11) has become a big deal in China. In Chinese\, a single person is sometimes called a “guānggùn” (光棍)—literally\, a “bare stick”—and four lonely sticks (11/11) turned into a cheeky celebration of being single. \n\n\n\nOriginally\, it was a day for singles to treat themselves—because why not celebrate living life on your own terms? But rather than encourage more shopping\, we think Double Eleven is a great excuse to get together\, meet new people\, and create some meaningful memories. \n\n\n\nWho Comes to Dinner?\n\n\n\nTeachers and students from Dear Asia! \n\n\n\nJoin us for a fun\, social evening over Chinese hotpot—one of the best communal meals in Asian cuisine. It’s warm\, flavorful\, and always better with a crowd. Expect casual vibes\, shared tables\, good conversation\, and maybe even some new friendships. \n\n\n\n💸 Is It Free?\n\n\n\nThe event is free to join\, but we’ll split the bill at the table.💰 Estimated cost: £31 (plus service charges) All You Can Eat Hotpot! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails of the event\n\n\n\n\n11th November \n\n\n\nTime: 6:30pm \n\n\n\nWhere:  A Chinese hotpot restaurant in W1 near Oxford Circus \n\n\n\nWho: All are welcome! \n\n\n\n You just have to pay your portion for the night.\n\n\n\n\nbook ticketSubmitting form\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are a Dear Asia Student\n\n\n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nYou must be a current student to attend the event free(required)\n Yes No\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Send RSVPSubmitting form\n \n \n \nΔ\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultural introduction\n\n\n\nDouble Eleven\, also known as Singles’ Day (光棍节) and celebrated on November 11th (11/11) in China\, began as an informal celebration among university students in the 1990s to honour single life—symbolised by the four solitary “1”s in the date. Over time\, it evolved from a lighthearted\, counter-Valentine’s Day event into the world’s largest online shopping festival\, especially after e-commerce giant Alibaba transformed it into a major retail holiday in 2009. \n\n\n\nCulturally\, Double Eleven reflects the rapid transformation of modern Chinese consumerism\, digital innovation\, and youth culture. It highlights shifting attitudes toward identity\, relationships\, and economic participation in an increasingly individualistic and tech-driven society. What started as a celebration of solitude has become a symbol of commercial power\, digital culture\, and global economic influence\, with growing recognition and participation beyond China’s borders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. It is often regarded as a symbol of national pride and unity\, especially since China’s rise to dominance in international competitions since the 1950s. The sport represents discipline\, perseverance\, and collective strength\, values that align closely with traditional Chinese ideals. For many Chinese citizens\, success in ping pong on the world stage is not just athletic achievement but a reflection of China’s global standing and cultural resurgence. \n\n\n\nMoreover\, ping pong holds historical importance due to its role in international diplomacy. The 1971 “Ping Pong Diplomacy” helped reopen diplomatic relations between China and the United States during the Cold War era\, showing how the sport became a tool of soft power and cross-cultural communication. Today\, ping pong is embedded in everyday Chinese life—played in schools\, parks\, and offices—fostering social interaction across generations and reinforcing a shared cultural identity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. From neon-lit karaoke boxes in Tokyo to plush KTV lounges in Seoul and all-night sessions in Taipei\, karaoke is one of Asia’s favorite ways to unwind. Friends gather to belt out pop hits\, coworkers bond over shared songs\, and sometimes even business deals are sealed between verses and glasses of soju or beer. There’s a spirit of joyful vulnerability in karaoke — where no one’s judged\, everyone cheers\, and music becomes the common language. \n\n\n\nIn many East Asian cultures\, singing together breaks the ice\, strengthens relationships\, and offers a release from the pressures of daily life. Whether you’re crooning a ballad or laughing through a duet\, karaoke is where voices rise and barriers fall. \n\n\n\nWhat Is The Occasion?\n\n\n\nThat’s why Dear Asia — the school of Asian languages and culture in London — is taking our teachers and students out for a karaoke social! While it’s not a national holiday\, it has become a time for joy and celebration\, often associated with romance. Couples exchange gifts and enjoy romantic dinners\, while vibrant light displays create a magical atmosphere. \n\n\n\nKFC has become a Christmas tradition largely due to a successful marketing campaign in the 1970s. At that time\, KFC promoted the idea of enjoying fried chicken as a festive meal\, positioning it as a Western-style Christmas dinner. The campaign resonated with the public\, leading to a unique cultural phenomenon where families and couples began to celebrate Christmas by ordering KFC. \n\n\n\nToday\, many people pre-order KFC for Christmas Eve\, and it’s common to see festive buckets of fried chicken being enjoyed alongside holiday decorations. The association of KFC with Christmas has become so strong that it represents a fun and convenient way to celebrate the holiday\, blending Western influences with Japanese customs.

Over time\, it evolved into the world’s largest shopping event\, where people—single or not—treat themselves and enjoy experiences like dining\, travel\, and entertainment. \n\n\n\nBeyond shopping\, the day also highlights changing social attitudes towards being single. Single’s Day celebrates individualism\, self-love\, and independence\, all of which resonate with a global audience. It has become an opportunity for people to reclaim the narrative around being single\, from being something viewed as undesirable to being a status that is celebrated and enjoyed. \n\n\n\nIn various cultures\, similar celebrations exist like Korea’s Black Day (April 14th)\, where singles gather to eat jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) together. Both days highlight the idea of enjoying one’s own company and embracing singleness in a fun\, social way.

Originating in Japan in the 1980s\, Shinrin-yoku has gained global recognition for its therapeutic benefits. The practice encourages individuals to slow down\, engage their senses\, and mindfully connect with the natural world. By spending time in forests or natural environments\, participants can experience a range of health benefits\, including reduced stress levels\, improved mood\, enhanced immune function\, and increased creativity. Shinrin-yoku is not about hiking or exercise but rather about being present in nature and allowing its sights\, sounds\, and scents to soothe the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. As modern life becomes increasingly fast-paced and urbanized\, Shinrin-yoku offers a simple yet profound way to reconnect with the healing power of the natural world.
