It is based on the story of Orihime\, the weaving princess represented by the star Vega\, and Hikoboshi\, the cowherd represented by the star Altair. According to the myth\, the two lovers are separated by the Milky Way and are only allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month\, when the stars align across the night sky. \n\n\n\nOver time\, this celestial story became a cultural tradition celebrated across Japan. Tanabata is a time when people express their hopes and dreams by writing wishes on small\, colourful paper strips called tanzaku\, which are then tied to bamboo branches. As the bamboo sways in the summer wind\, it is believed that these wishes rise to the heavens and may be granted. \n\n\n\nThe festival is also closely connected to the arrival of summer\, often marked by vibrant decorations\, street celebrations\, and a sense of renewal and optimism. Bamboo\, wind\, and starlight all play symbolic roles\, reflecting themes of longing\, connection\, and the flow of wishes between earth and sky. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. The fleeting beauty of these blossoms has been cherished for centuries\, symbolizing renewal\, hope\, and the transient nature of life. \n\n\n\nSakura Matsuri\, or the Cherry Blossom Festival\, is a beloved tradition that brings people together to celebrate the arrival of spring. Families and friends gather under blooming trees for hanami (flower viewing)\, sharing food\, laughter\, and songs as they admire the delicate petals drifting in the breeze. \n\n\n\nBeyond its beauty\, sakura holds deep cultural meaning in Japan. The blossoms remind people to appreciate the present moment — to find joy in what is temporary and to welcome change with grace. During this season\, towns and parks are filled with pink lanterns\, festive stalls\, and traditional sweets like wagashi\, all inspired by the cherry blossom’s elegance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month\, when the first full moon of the new year rises — symbolizing reunion\, brightness\, and hope. \n\n\n\nTraditionally\, families gather to admire glowing lanterns\, solve riddles written on them\, and share sweet glutinous rice dumplings (tāngyuán 汤圆)\, which represent unity and togetherness. The round shape of both the lanterns and the dumplings reflects the idea of wholeness and harmony in the year ahead. \n\n\n\nLanterns have long been a part of Asian culture\, representing the wish for light\, guidance\, and prosperity. In ancient times\, people believed lighting lanterns could bring good fortune and drive away darkness. Over the centuries\, they evolved from simple paper lamps to intricate works of art — glowing symbols of creativity and joy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. SUMMARY:Double Eleven Hotpot Dinner Social - Don't Eat Alone on Single's Day...
DESCRIPTION:Nov11Double Eleven Hotpot Dinner Social – Don’t Eat Alone on Single’s Day…When:11 November 2025 18:00Where:W1 \nClick the BOOK TICKET button below to reserve your spot via our Eventbrite listing.\n\n\n\nRegisterSubmitting form\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat is Double Eleven?\n\n\n\nIf you’re a fan of Asian culture\, you might already know that Double Eleven (11/11) has become a big deal in China. In Chinese\, a single person is sometimes called a “guānggùn” (光棍)—literally\, a “bare stick”—and four lonely sticks (11/11) turned into a cheeky celebration of being single. \n\n\n\nOriginally\, it was a day for singles to treat themselves—because why not celebrate living life on your own terms? But rather than encourage more shopping\, we think Double Eleven is a great excuse to get together\, meet new people\, and create some meaningful memories. \n\n\n\nWho Comes to Dinner?\n\n\n\nTeachers and students from Dear Asia! \n\n\n\nJoin us for a fun\, social evening over Chinese hotpot—one of the best communal meals in Asian cuisine. It’s warm\, flavorful\, and always better with a crowd. Expect casual vibes\, shared tables\, good conversation\, and maybe even some new friendships. \n\n\n\n💸 Is It Free?\n\n\n\nThe event is free to join\, but we’ll split the bill at the table.💰 Estimated cost: £31 (plus service charges) All You Can Eat Hotpot! \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails of the event\n\n\n\n\n11th November \n\n\n\nTime: 6:30pm \n\n\n\nWhere:  A Chinese hotpot restaurant in W1 near Oxford Circus \n\n\n\nWho: All are welcome! \n\n\n\n You just have to pay your portion for the night.\n\n\n\n\nbook ticketSubmitting form\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you are a Dear Asia Student\n\n\n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n\nYou must be a current student to attend the event free(required)\n Yes No\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n \n \n \n Send RSVPSubmitting form\n \n \n \nΔ\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultural introduction\n\n\n\nDouble Eleven\, also known as Singles’ Day (光棍节) and celebrated on November 11th (11/11) in China\, began as an informal celebration among university students in the 1990s to honour single life—symbolised by the four solitary “1”s in the date. Over time\, it evolved from a lighthearted\, counter-Valentine’s Day event into the world’s largest online shopping festival\, especially after e-commerce giant Alibaba transformed it into a major retail holiday in 2009. \n\n\n\nCulturally\, Double Eleven reflects the rapid transformation of modern Chinese consumerism\, digital innovation\, and youth culture. It highlights shifting attitudes toward identity\, relationships\, and economic participation in an increasingly individualistic and tech-driven society. What started as a celebration of solitude has become a symbol of commercial power\, digital culture\, and global economic influence\, with growing recognition and participation beyond China’s borders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. These masks are not just artistic objects but powerful cultural symbols that reflect the values\, beliefs\, and social commentary of Korean society. Crafted with exaggerated expressions\, each tal character represents archetypes such as the nobleman\, the young woman\, the monk\, or the fool—often used to satirise the upper classes\, criticize hypocrisy\, and highlight social inequalities. \n\n\n\nCulturally\, tal masks serve as a means of collective storytelling and catharsis\, allowing performers and audiences to confront social issues through humour\, dance\, and performance. They also hold spiritual significance\, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune. Today\, the tal is a cherished symbol of Korean heritage\, resilience\, and identity—connecting modern Koreans with their ancestral traditions and community values. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. Traditionally held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month\, it celebrates the harvest season\, family unity\, and appreciation of the moon\, which is believed to be at its brightest and fullest on that night. \n\n\n\nWoodblock painting\, also known as woodblock printing\, holds profound cultural significance as both an artistic technique and a vehicle for storytelling\, cultural transmission\, and social influence. Originating in China and later flourishing in countries like Japan (as ukiyo-e)\, Korea (minhwa)\, and parts of Southeast Asia\, this method allowed for the mass production of images\, texts\, and religious works\, making art and knowledge more widely accessible across social classes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. It is often regarded as a symbol of national pride and unity\, especially since China’s rise to dominance in international competitions since the 1950s. The sport represents discipline\, perseverance\, and collective strength\, values that align closely with traditional Chinese ideals. For many Chinese citizens\, success in ping pong on the world stage is not just athletic achievement but a reflection of China’s global standing and cultural resurgence. \n\n\n\nMoreover\, ping pong holds historical importance due to its role in international diplomacy. The 1971 “Ping Pong Diplomacy” helped reopen diplomatic relations between China and the United States during the Cold War era\, showing how the sport became a tool of soft power and cross-cultural communication. Today\, ping pong is embedded in everyday Chinese life—played in schools\, parks\, and offices—fostering social interaction across generations and reinforcing a shared cultural identity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. Rooted in a Chinese legend brought to Japan during the Heian period\, Tanabata reflects themes of love\, longing\, and perseverance. Traditionally celebrated on July 7th\, people write their wishes on colorful strips of paper (tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo branches\, blending romantic myth with hopes for the future. \n\n\n\nThe festival also highlights the importance of nature\, seasonal change\, and spiritual expression in Japanese culture. The act of writing wishes and decorating bamboo trees is not just festive but also reflective\, symbolizing human desire to connect with higher forces and the universe. Tanabata is celebrated across Japan with regional variations\, parades\, and elaborate decorations\, showcasing the country’s ability to preserve ancient traditions while adapting them to modern communal identity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. Rather than discarding broken items\, Kintsugi honors their flaws as part of their history\, symbolizing resilience\, healing\, and transformation. This practice reflects traditional Japanese values like mottainai (avoiding waste) and encourages mindful living in contrast to modern consumerism. Spiritually\, it resonates with ideas of renewal found in Shinto and Buddhist traditions\, while also serving as a narrative vessel that preserves the memory and identity of objects through their visible scars. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. From neon-lit karaoke boxes in Tokyo to plush KTV lounges in Seoul and all-night sessions in Taipei\, karaoke is one of Asia’s favorite ways to unwind. Friends gather to belt out pop hits\, coworkers bond over shared songs\, and sometimes even business deals are sealed between verses and glasses of soju or beer. There’s a spirit of joyful vulnerability in karaoke — where no one’s judged\, everyone cheers\, and music becomes the common language. \n\n\n\nIn many East Asian cultures\, singing together breaks the ice\, strengthens relationships\, and offers a release from the pressures of daily life. This traditional aesthetic embraces imperfection and transience\, finding quiet elegance in the worn\, the weathered\, and the broken. It reflects a deep cultural humbleness—an acceptance of flaws\, rather than a need to hide them. \n\n\n\nHow We Design Your Kintsugi Experience\n\n\n\nAfter trying several Kintsugi workshops in London\, we felt something was missing—depth\, cultural context\, and intention. Our workshop fits perfectly around our school’s craft tables—no heavy tools or gear needed\, just mindfulness and care – an afternoon to sink into making something meaningful and beautiful. \n\n\n\nWhat Makes Our Workshop Special\n\n\n\n🧘‍♂️ Philosophy Meets Practice\n\n\n\nWe’ll start by sharing simple Japanese phrases and etiquette to ease you into a calm\, mindful state. With roots dating back over 2\,000 years\, the festival is a time to honor cultural heritage\, enjoy festive customs\, and reflect on themes of loyalty and community. \n\n\n\nOne of the most iconic traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival is the thrilling dragon boat races. In these races\, teams of paddlers row long\, brightly painted boats shaped like dragons to the beat of rhythmic drumming. This tradition is said to commemorate the heroic poet Qu Yuan\, who lived during the Warring States period. According to legend\, Qu Yuan\, a loyal minister\, drowned himself in the Miluo River as an act of protest against political corruption. Villagers raced their boats to save him and threw rice into the river to distract fish from his body. Over time\, this act evolved into the dragon boat races and the custom of eating zongzi\, glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves\, which remain a beloved festival food today. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. SUMMARY:World Culture Diversity Day - Spotlight on Peking Opera
DESCRIPTION:May21World Culture Diversity Day – Spotlight on Peking OperaWhen:21 May 2025 18:00Where:Dear Asia Aldgate Center \n\nClick the BOOK TICKET button below to reserve your spot via our Eventbrite listing.\n\n\n\nbook ticketSubmitting form\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCelebrate World Culture Diversity Day with Us\n\n\n\nAt Dear Asia\, World Culture Diversity Day is close to our hearts. As a team of first- and second-generation Asian immigrants based in London\, we’re proud to live in one of the most multicultural cities in the world. London is a true melting pot\, and we see this day as an opportunity to celebrate\, share\, and promote deeper awareness of Asian cultures in a way that is accessible\, joyful\, and meaningful. \n\n\n\nSpotlight on Peking Opera\n\n\n\nEach year on this day\, we shine a spotlight on a different cultural tradition from Asia — one that deserves to be better known and appreciated. This year\, we’ve chosen Peking Opera. \n\n\n\nPeking Opera\, or Jingju\, is one of the most iconic forms of Chinese traditional theatre. Developed in the 18th century and refined over centuries\, it combines music\, dance\, mime\, acrobatics\, and stylized acting into a rich and symbolic performance art. The characters are vividly brought to life through elaborate costumes and distinctive painted face masks known as lianpu. Each color and pattern on the mask reveals the personality\, role\, and fate of the character — from noble generals to cunning villains\, wise elders to spirited young women. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect:\n\n\n\nWe’re not just teachers — we’re experience designers. Every Dear Asia workshop engages your head\, hands\, and heart. Learn something new\, make something beautiful\, taste something delicious\, and connect more deeply with the cultures of Asia. \n\n\n\nIn this session\, you’ll: \n\n\n\n\nLearn about Peking Opera and the symbolism behind the colorful face masks\n\n\n\nMake your own hanging ornament inspired by the Huadan character\n\n\n\nTaste a traditional treat that ties into the culture we’re exploring\n\n\n\n\nThe craft is beginner-friendly — simple enough for all ages\, yet rich in meaning. As you assemble your ornament\, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how even the smallest decorative details serve to tell stories on the grand stage of Peking Opera. \n\n\n\nCome celebrate with us — and leave with more than just a souvenir: leave with a story\, a memory\, and a connection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails of the event\n\n\n\n\n21st May\n\n\n\nTime: 6-7pm \n\n\n\nWhere:  Dear Asia in Aldgate Tower \n\n\n\nWho: All are welcome! \n\n\n\n  £30 – book your tickets if you are not one of our current students. The word “Setsubun” means “seasonal division\,” as it signifies the day before the start of the new season. It’s a festive occasion that combines ancient traditions with a sense of renewal and hope for the year ahead. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, Setsubun was a time for people to cleanse themselves from the misfortunes of the past year and prepare for the blessings of the upcoming season. One of the most popular customs is mamemaki\, the act of throwing roasted soybeans to drive away evil spirits and bring good fortune. People often chant\, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (“Out with the demons! In with the luck!”) as they toss beans\, symbolising the warding off of bad luck and welcoming prosperity. \n\n\n\nIn addition to mamemaki\, Ehomaki\, a special type of sushi roll\, is enjoyed during Setsubun. The long\, uncut sushi roll is filled with a variety of ingredients that are meant to bring good health and happiness. Traditionally\, it is eaten in silence while facing the year’s “lucky direction\,” which varies each year based on ancient fortune-telling practices. This custom is believed to bring good fortune and happiness to those who partake. \n\n\n\nSetsubun is a time to reflect\, rejuvenate\, and embrace the changing seasons. Whether through festive rituals\, delicious food\, or family gatherings\, it is a celebration of both the end of winter and the hope for a prosperous and joyful spring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. The Year of the Snake\, which will begin on January 29\, 2025\, is a symbol of wisdom\, mystery\, and transformation. \n\n\n\nDuring Chinese New Year\, families typically clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and make space for good fortune. They decorate with red symbols\, lanterns\, and couplets that represent wealth and happiness. People often gather for a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve\, where they share symbolic foods like dumplings and fish for prosperity. Many also give red envelopes filled with money to children and singles\, a gesture to bring good luck. \n\n\n\nOne of the most beloved traditions during the Lunar New Year is fortune stick telling (Kau Cim)\, a practice that dates back to ancient times. Typically performed in temples\, Kau Cim involves shaking a container filled with bamboo sticks\, each marked with a number. When a stick falls out\, the number is matched to a fortune\, offering guidance and predictions for the year ahead. This ritual is especially significant during the New Year\, as it symbolises the desire for insight\, protection\, and blessings. For many\, it is a way to seek direction for the months ahead\, whether in matters of health\, wealth\, or relationships. The fortune might offer reassuring predictions or advice\, but it always carries the message of growth and reflection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. While it’s not a national holiday\, it has become a time for joy and celebration\, often associated with romance. Couples exchange gifts and enjoy romantic dinners\, while vibrant light displays create a magical atmosphere. \n\n\n\nKFC has become a Christmas tradition largely due to a successful marketing campaign in the 1970s. At that time\, KFC promoted the idea of enjoying fried chicken as a festive meal\, positioning it as a Western-style Christmas dinner. The campaign resonated with the public\, leading to a unique cultural phenomenon where families and couples began to celebrate Christmas by ordering KFC. \n\n\n\nToday\, many people pre-order KFC for Christmas Eve\, and it’s common to see festive buckets of fried chicken being enjoyed alongside holiday decorations. The association of KFC with Christmas has become so strong that it represents a fun and convenient way to celebrate the holiday\, blending Western influences with Japanese customs.

Over time\, it evolved into a practical and artistic method for carrying and wrapping everyday items\, from clothing to gifts. \n\n\n\nMore than just a wrapping technique\, Furoshiki reflects the Japanese principles of respect\, thoughtfulness\, and sustainability. The care taken to wrap a gift using Furoshiki symbolises the giver’s intention and attention to detail\, making the wrapping just as important as the gift itself. The reusable cloth also embodies Japan’s strong cultural values around minimal waste and environmental consciousness\, long before sustainability became a global concern. \n\n\n\nToday\, Furoshiki is not only a symbol of tradition but also a modern\, eco-friendly alternative to disposable packaging\, embraced worldwide for its elegance and versatility.
