In some traditions\, riddles are written on lanterns\, and solving them brings luck and joy. \n\n\n\nThe Lantern Festival is also a time for families to gather\, admire the stunning lantern displays\, and enjoy festive foods like tangyuan—sweet glutinous rice balls that symbolise family unity and togetherness. \n\n\n\nThis festival not only honors cultural traditions but also celebrates light\, new beginnings\, and the connections we share with one another. The word “Setsubun” means “seasonal division\,” as it signifies the day before the start of the new season. It’s a festive occasion that combines ancient traditions with a sense of renewal and hope for the year ahead. \n\n\n\nHistorically\, Setsubun was a time for people to cleanse themselves from the misfortunes of the past year and prepare for the blessings of the upcoming season. One of the most popular customs is mamemaki\, the act of throwing roasted soybeans to drive away evil spirits and bring good fortune. People often chant\, “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” (“Out with the demons! In with the luck!”) as they toss beans\, symbolising the warding off of bad luck and welcoming prosperity. \n\n\n\nIn addition to mamemaki\, Ehomaki\, a special type of sushi roll\, is enjoyed during Setsubun. The long\, uncut sushi roll is filled with a variety of ingredients that are meant to bring good health and happiness. Traditionally\, it is eaten in silence while facing the year’s “lucky direction\,” which varies each year based on ancient fortune-telling practices. This custom is believed to bring good fortune and happiness to those who partake. \n\n\n\nSetsubun is a time to reflect\, rejuvenate\, and embrace the changing seasons. Whether through festive rituals\, delicious food\, or family gatherings\, it is a celebration of both the end of winter and the hope for a prosperous and joyful spring. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. The Year of the Snake\, which will begin on January 29\, 2025\, is a symbol of wisdom\, mystery\, and transformation. \n\n\n\nDuring Chinese New Year\, families typically clean their homes to sweep away bad luck and make space for good fortune. They decorate with red symbols\, lanterns\, and couplets that represent wealth and happiness. People often gather for a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve\, where they share symbolic foods like dumplings and fish for prosperity. Many also give red envelopes filled with money to children and singles\, a gesture to bring good luck. \n\n\n\nOne of the most beloved traditions during the Lunar New Year is fortune stick telling (Kau Cim)\, a practice that dates back to ancient times. Typically performed in temples\, Kau Cim involves shaking a container filled with bamboo sticks\, each marked with a number. When a stick falls out\, the number is matched to a fortune\, offering guidance and predictions for the year ahead. This ritual is especially significant during the New Year\, as it symbolises the desire for insight\, protection\, and blessings. For many\, it is a way to seek direction for the months ahead\, whether in matters of health\, wealth\, or relationships. The fortune might offer reassuring predictions or advice\, but it always carries the message of growth and reflection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant to hire us? \n\n\n\nBespoke event for you! \n\n\n\nDear Asia is a London-based event organiser specialising in creative workshops celebrating Asian cultures. While it’s not a national holiday\, it has become a time for joy and celebration\, often associated with romance. Couples exchange gifts and enjoy romantic dinners\, while vibrant light displays create a magical atmosphere. \n\n\n\nKFC has become a Christmas tradition largely due to a successful marketing campaign in the 1970s. At that time\, KFC promoted the idea of enjoying fried chicken as a festive meal\, positioning it as a Western-style Christmas dinner. The campaign resonated with the public\, leading to a unique cultural phenomenon where families and couples began to celebrate Christmas by ordering KFC. \n\n\n\nToday\, many people pre-order KFC for Christmas Eve\, and it’s common to see festive buckets of fried chicken being enjoyed alongside holiday decorations. The association of KFC with Christmas has become so strong that it represents a fun and convenient way to celebrate the holiday\, blending Western influences with Japanese customs.

The care taken to wrap a gift using Furoshiki symbolises the giver’s intention and attention to detail\, making the wrapping just as important as the gift itself. The reusable cloth also embodies Japan’s strong cultural values around minimal waste and environmental consciousness\, long before sustainability became a global concern. \n\n\n\nToday\, Furoshiki is not only a symbol of tradition but also a modern\, eco-friendly alternative to disposable packaging\, embraced worldwide for its elegance and versatility.

For the two\, it was love at first sight. However\, when Zhinhu’s mother discovered that her daughter married a mere mortal\, she brought her back to heaven and casted a massive river between earth and heaven to separate the couple – which is now referred to as the Milky Way. Touched by the love between Zhinhu and Niulang\, the magpies on land flew up to heaven and helped the couple by forming a bridge across the river\, allowing the two to reunite. Their love moved Zhinhu’s mother\, who eventually permitted the couple to meet once a year on that very same day\, which is the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. \n\n\n\nThe Qixi Festival is celebrated with various customs\, including activities such as embroidery. The practice encourages individuals to slow down\, engage their senses\, and mindfully connect with the natural world. By spending time in forests or natural environments\, participants can experience a range of health benefits\, including reduced stress levels\, improved mood\, enhanced immune function\, and increased creativity. Shinrin-yoku is not about hiking or exercise but rather about being present in nature and allowing its sights\, sounds\, and scents to soothe the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. As modern life becomes increasingly fast-paced and urbanized\, Shinrin-yoku offers a simple yet profound way to reconnect with the healing power of the natural world.

Traditionally\, people celebrate Tanabata by writing their wishes\, poetry\, or prayers on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku. These tanzaku are then hung on bamboo branches\, which are believed to have a sacred and purifying effect. The bamboo and decorations are often set afloat on a river or burned after the festival\, symbolizing the release and fulfillment of the wishes. This practice reflects the deep cultural value placed on the power of wishes and dreams.

With a history spanning over 2\,000 years\, the festival commemorates the patriotic poet Qu Yuan\, who drowned himself in the Miluo River in protest against corruption. To prevent fish from consuming his body\, villagers raced dragon-shaped boats to rescue him\, which gave rise to the modern-day dragon boat races. Today\, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with vibrant dragon boat races\, where teams paddle vigorously to the rhythm of drums\, symbolizing the spirit of unity and perseverance. Additionally\, the festival is marked by the consumption of sticky rice dumplings\, called zongzi\, which are traditionally wrapped in bamboo leaves. These festivities not only honor the memory of Qu Yuan but also foster a sense of community and cultural pride among participants and spectators alike.

Meticulously crafted\, they offer spaces for contemplation and meditation. Each element is arranged for harmony and inner peace. Central to Zen gardens is “wabi-sabi\,” celebrating imperfection and simplicity. Rocks\, gravel\, sand\, and moss create minimalist compositions\, evoking serenity and timelessness. Rocks and gravel symbolize natural formations\, inviting contemplation on impermanence and interconnectedness. Raked patterns suggest fluidity and movement. The “kare-eda\,” or dry landscape\, with rocks and gravel\, evokes vastness and emptiness\, prompting reflection on life’s impermanence. Natural elements like moss and bamboo add texture and depth\, reflecting interconnectedness. Zen gardens serve as spiritual sanctuaries\, fostering mindfulness and presence. The philosophy of Zen Buddhism emphasizes acceptance and simplicity\, reflected in garden design. In Zen gardens\, one finds solace\, quieting the mind and connecting with nature’s rhythms. Ultimately\, they remind us of simplicity and inner peace amidst life’s chaos.
