Women in Asia
You may have come across stories of Asian women in books and films—some still frozen in the era of bound feet, as seen in Wild Swans, or framed by the heavily stylized makeup from Memoirs of a Geisha. For decades, we were cast in roles shaped by others—silent, mysterious, obedient, exotic.
But Asian women in the 21st century are writing new chapters. This is the era of the bold and the brilliant—of Michelle Yeoh accepting an Oscar in her 60s, of Ali Wong making us laugh while laying bare our truths. We are artists, athletes, scientists, mothers, CEOs, rebels, and dreamers. Strong, graceful, and outspoken.
We will start our story down the history lane from the Qipao — a dress that has gone through many iterations over the decades and has heavily influenced the world’s perception of Asian women. Once a loose-fitting robe worn by Manchu women, it evolved in 1920s Shanghai into a body-skimming silhouette that symbolised modern femininity, elegance, and quiet strength. Over time, it became more than a garment; it became an icon — worn by movie stars, revolutionaries, and everyday women alike, each adding her own layer of meaning.
Today, the Qipao continues to inspire — not just as fashion, but as a canvas of heritage and identity. In our workshops, we explore this legacy through storytelling and hands-on crafts, allowing participants to engage with its rich history while creating something personal and beautiful. Whether through designing Qipao-themed accessories or simply learning about its evolution, we celebrate how this dress tells the larger story of Asian women — graceful, strong, and ever-evolving.

Heads • Hands • Hearts
At Dear Asia, each cultural celebration is never a small undertaking. Our entire team comes together to craft signature experiences designed for meaningful impact and lasting impressions. We want every guest at our events to see, feel, learn, taste, and create — to connect genuinely with Asian cultures through immersive, multi-sensory experiences. That’s why every Dear Asia event is built around three core elements – Heads, Hands and Hearts.
A Day for us women
Dear Asia is a women-led team, and most of us are women — so your day with us is just as special for us as it is for you.
We’ve curated a collection of beautiful arts and crafts to share, each one thoughtfully chosen to celebrate culture, creativity, and connection. One of our signature workshops is Chinese cloisonné jewelry making — a timeless craft that transforms intricate design into meaningful pieces you can keep forever. We also love sharing the story of the Qipao, with a selection of themed crafts that highlight its cultural legacy and evolving beauty.
For those looking to slow down and reconnect through craft, we highly recommend Japanese sashiko embroidery — a mindful, meditative practice rooted in simplicity and elegance.
